Heat and dogs: why your companion doesn't like heatwaves

If your dog could talk during a heatwave, he'd probably say, "I'm already wearing a fur coat, please don't turn up the heat."

High temperatures can be particularly difficult for dogs. Unlike us, they sweat very little and mainly regulate their temperature by panting. As a result, they are much more susceptible to heatstroke.

When temperatures rise, favor walks early in the morning or in the evening. Avoid hot asphalt, which can quickly damage paw pads. A simple trick is to place your hand on the ground for a few seconds: if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for your dog.

Always make sure fresh water is available and offer a shaded spot. A slightly damp towel can help cool him down, but it's best to avoid covering him entirely.

Signs of heatstroke should be taken seriously: excessive panting, unusual fatigue, heavy salivation, difficulty walking, or a vacant stare. In this case, you must act quickly and contact a veterinarian.

In summer, the best program for your dog is often very simple: drink, sleep, move in the shade, and silently judge humans who go out at 2 p.m.
